Millington was founded in 1878 by Mr. and Mrs. George Millington, who donated money to settlers to start a town and asked for the settlers to name the town after them. Millington grew quickly, with 5,000 members joining the Baptist Church when it opened in 1888. The town began to industrialize in 1890 and was officially incorporated in 1903.
Soon afterward, Millington became a training ground for World War I troops. The military pulled out soon after the war was over but returned during World War II, when the US Navy claimed the airport for training. The presence of the Navy brought prosperity to Millington and its citizens.
Today, Millington is the home of the Memphis International Raceway, where you can go to see drag races, as well as the Rusty Wallace Racing Experience, which offers the chance of a lifetime to racing enthusiasts.
