Known as the unofficial birthplace of rock ‘n roll, the city of Memphis figures prominently into the history of blues and soul music. For starters, Memphis is the undisputed Mecca for Elvis Presley lovers. Not only is Sun Studio—the studio where Elvis recorded his first record—located in Memphis, but the city is also home to Graceland, the mansion where the King lived and ultimately passed away. Graceland has since been turned into a museum and currently holds the spot as the second most-visited home in the United States. If you like museums and music, you can also check out the Memphis Music Hall of Fame, which highlights greats like Booker T and the MGs, AL Green, Isaac Hayes and plenty more.
When it comes to music, Memphis is just as relevant now as it always has been. The city is home to plenty of great places you can still hear cutting-edge live music. Beale Street runs through the heart of the town and offers plenty of great music and food; the street was also recently voted Most Iconic Road by USA Today. The Hi-Tone is a great club has been around a long time and is still going strong. Plus, BB King's Blues Club is absolutely as cool as you think it is: located on historic Beale St, the club features blues every night of the week.
Geographically, Memphis is located in the southwestern part of the state of Tennessee, right along the east bank of the Mississippi River. The river proved essential in the original settlement of Memphis. These days, you can still catch a ride on a steam boat and hear a guide tell fascinating stories of the river's past.
Many events over time have made Memphis historically significant. In addition to Elvis, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. also met his tragic end in Memphis. The hotel at which Dr. King was assassinated has since been turned into the National Civil Rights Museum.
