Porsche History

Gossett Volkswagen Porsche is proud to bear the name of one of the most exclusive and respected automakers on the market. Porsche is known around the world not only for its dominance in creating high-performance supercars, but also for being one of the only completely independent automotive makers. Read on for an overview of the history of the Porsche brand!

The history of Porsche is a long and storied tale that started in 1948. Founder Ferdinand Porsche and his son Ferdinand (“Ferry”) set out to build the world’s greatest sports cars in 1948 with 200 workers behind them. The elder Porsche was an established engineer, having worked for Daimler Chrysler and Volkswagen, where he created the VW Beetle’s iconic design. The younger Porsche worked hard to expand the business and took a key role in designing the very first Porsche sports car: the 356.

In the mid 1950s, Porsche continued to grow. The automaker introduced its very own line of engines, as well as a more powerful version of the 356. The highly acclaimed 356 made its mark all across the automotive world; following suit was the iconic Porsche 911, introduced in 1964.

Front-engine Porsches arrived next in the 1970s, starting with the 924 and moving to the 944 and 968. Porsche’s first V8 engine was also released in 1978 as the powerful and sophisticated 928. The 968 and 928 were both retired in 1995 as the company shifted its concentration to the 911 and Boxster.

The famous Porsche 911 proceeded to evolve over the three decades since it was first introduced, leading up to the release of the 911 Carrera in 1999. Today’s Porsche lineup includes seemingly endless variations of the Boxter, Cayman, 911, 918 Spyder, Panamera, Macan, and Cayenne.

Porsche continues to set the standards in performance, quality, innovation and style all across the world. Based on over 50 years of quality performance vehicles and innovative vehicle designs, the Porsche name is now synonymous with the word “luxury.”
